Old Fashioned Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

3/4 cups butter
1/4 cups apple sauce
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
2 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground allspice
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
2 cups rolled oats
1 cups walnuts
1 1/2 cups raisins
pinch ground cloves
1/2 cups wheat germ


  1. Preheat oven to 350 °F (165 °C) and grease cookie sheets.
  2. In a large bowl, cream shortening, applesauce, brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
  3. Combine the flour, baking soda, salt and spices; stir into the creamed mixture until well blended.
  4. Mix in the rolled oats and walnuts. Finally, stir in the raisins.
  5. Drop by heaping tablespoonfuls 2 to 3" apart onto prepared cookie sheets.
  6. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until edges are golden and tops are dry. Cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute before removing to cool on wire racks.
